Air Pollution

The greatest source of air pollution on Ft. Pickett comes from smoke generated by fires.  These may be range fires initiated by live firing or pyrotechnic devices, controlled burning, or any number of unintentional conflagrations.  Fire is an important tool to the Ft. Pickett Natural Resources Division in ecosystem management.

At certain times of the year, due to weather conditions mainly, pyrotechnic device use may be suspended.  Low lying smoke lingering on nearby highways poses a potential safety hazard to motorists.  Pay close attention to guidelines regarding potential fire hazards and observe any suspensions established by Ft. Pickett personnel.

Other ways to prevent air pollution include:

  • Keep lids tightly closed on volatile substances
  • Prevent spillage of POL products by keeping containers closed
  • Do not fill fuel tanks to the point of overflow
  • Contain and clean up spills of volatile substances immediately
  • Do not leave vehicles running unnecessarily
  • Keep vehicles and equipment properly PMCS'd
