Types of Mercury Containing Lamps (Universal Waste):


This SOP applies to all activities, to include tenants, and training units within the Maneuver Training Center (MTC).
The Philip lamps with the green end will be collected for recycling purposes.
(1) Fluorescent Lamps
(2) Mercury Vapor Lamps
(3) High Pressure Sodium Lamps
(4) Metal Halide Lamps
(5) Multi-Vapor Lamps

Types of Containers:


(1) USA Lamps Recycling containers

Satellite Accumulation Area Requirements for MTC Tenants:


(1) All tubing, once defective, will be handled in a safe manner to minimize breakage.
(2) There will be four satellite accumulation areas, and they are:
    (a) Mobilization and Training Equipment Site (MATES)
    (b) Facilities and Engineering, Electrical Shop
    (c) Facilities and Engineering, Self-help Storage
    (d) STARC Headquarters, Building T-316
(3) All other tenants must submit a work order to Facilities and Engineering for changing of any of the above mentioned lamps.
(4) All self-help activities/units at the MTC must turn-in a lamp to the Facilities and Engineering, Self-Help warehouse before they will be issue another lamp.
(5) Each container given to the satellite accumulation areas must have the words, Universal Waste-Lamps. DO NOT DATE LABEL or CONTAINER.
(6) Each satellite accumulation area will be picked up by the Recycling Center personnel on their daily routes to pick up recyclable paper.
(7) Each of the mentioned tenants must make the recycling center personnel aware that that their containers are full. This can be done by calling the Recycling Center at ext. 2800.

Waste Operator Duties at the MTC Waste Accumulation Facility


(1) The waste operator will weigh each Universal Waste-Lamp container and place on a pallet.
(2) The waste operator will make sure the Universal Waste-Lamp marking or label is on the container. The Universal Waste label and container must have the date the material was received at the MTC Waste Accumulation Facility.
(3) A completed Universal Waste-Lamp label is on Page 3. A properly marked container at the MTC Waste Accumulation Facility in on Page 4 Section B.
(4) The waste operator will complete the Monthly Universal Waste Accumulation logbook sheet for the month in which the waste was received.
(5) The waste operator will place the containers inside building T-2361.
(6) The waste operator will inform the MTC-Environmental Specialist monthly on the number of containers at the MTC Waste Accumulation Facility.
(7) The waste operator will conduct a weekly inspection of Waste Accumulation Facility using the checklist in Appendix A.
