Waste Stream- Spent M5-HC Smoke Pots:
This SOP applies to all activities, to include tenants, and training units within the Maneuver Training Center (MTC).(1) Spent M5-HC Smoke Pots will be disposed of as a hazardous waste.
(2) According to Hazardous Waste Study No. 37-7016-97/98 United States Army Environmental Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland
(3) EPA Waste Codes: D006, D008
Types of Containers:
(1) 55 or 85 gallon yellow open-head over pack containers.Transporting Requirements for MTC Tenants/Units:
(1) Units must bring all spent M5-HC smoke pots to the Ammo Supply Point (ASP), Building T-495 for verification.(2) The ASP will verify that the smoke pot(s) are spent and no longer pose a threat as an explosive device.
(3) The unit will take the smoke pot(s) to recycling once verification has been completed. The verification will be a signed turn-in form that details the following information:
(a) Name of Smoke Pot
(b) National Stock Number
(c) Quantity
(d) Unit Name
(e) Point of Contact
(f) Signature of Point of Contact
(g) ASP Signature of Release
(4) DO NOT ACCUMULATE SPENT M5-HC SMOKE POTS AT THE TENANT/UNIT FACILITY OR ASP WHAREHOUSE. THEY MUST BE TAKEN TO THE WASTE ACCUMULATION FACILITY AT BUILDING T-2361.
Waste Operator Duties at the MTC Waste Accumulation Facility
(1) The waste operator will receive spent smoke pots "only" with completed turn-in form.(2) The waste operator will place the spent smoke pots within a 55/85-gallon container. The smoke pots may be crushed to accommodate more pots with the container.
(3) The waste operator will place the proper hazardous waste and Department of Transportation (DOT) labels on the container.
(4) The waste operator will complete the Monthly Hazardous Waste Accumulation logbook sheet for the month in which the waste was received.
(5) The waste operator will weigh the container and the first waste together. Once this has been done, the operator will no longer weigh the container for any waste added. Additional waste will be weighed and logged separately in the month for which it was received.
(6) The waste operator will place the container in an accumulation locker. This waste can be placed in the same accumulation locker with flammables or combustibles.
(7) The waste operator will inform the MTC-Environmental Specialist monthly on the number of containers at the MTC Waste Accumulation Facility.
(8) The waste operator will conduct a weekly inspection of the Waste Accumulation Facility using the checklist in Appendix A.
